Inside, you're really an orange-fur pussycat.

Julie, I can't find any alternative translations of Ex. 20:12. The penalties in Ex 21:17 and Lev 20:9 suggest that cursing the father is the opposite of honoring, which in turn would suggest that the "honor" intended is formal. On the other hand, Deut 21:18-21 says:

"If a man have a stubborn and unruly son, who will not hear the commandments of his father or mother, and being corrected, slighteth obedience: They shall take him and bring him to the ancients of his city, and to the gate of judgment, and shall say to them: This our son is rebellious and stubborn, he slighteth hearing our admonitions, he giveth himself to revelling, and to debauchery and banquetings. The people of the city shall stone him: and he shall die, that you may take away the evil out of the midst of you, and all Israel hearing it may be afraid."

Being a daughter, you're off the hook ... ;-)

Thanks Christopher for your analysis. The patriarchal society is part and parcel of the social and economic system, I agree.Cecilio Moraleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05283375962527765787noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18171692.post-10637837553980498512007-06-17T12:40:00.000-04:002007-06-17T12:40:00.000-04:00I like this notion too. When patriarchal values and institutions become decadent, as they have, progressively, for the last several generations, they become authoritarian and destructive. We see this in most of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.

Christopher Rhoades DÿkemaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18171692.post-45247183003702308962007-06-17T10:32:00.000-04:002007-06-17T10:32:00.000-04:00Happy Father's Day!What an awesome topic to explor...Happy Father's Day!

What an awesome topic to explore.

You know, as I dealt for years with conflicting emotions about that commandment due well a sort of lack of mutual respect, I finally came to the conclusion that it was a bad translation.

I think it is a broad concept, that word honor, and means far more than the obeisance and obedience it adopted in common culture.

I think it means as you have used it, which is how I think of it.

And I love the idea of honoring all in the nurture chain.

Brilliant.Julie Pipperthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03169574697104642479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18171692.post-32680432915466741372007-06-17T10:09:00.000-04:002007-06-17T10:09:00.000-04:00Once again you brought tears to my eyes, and I'm u...Once again you brought tears to my eyes, and I'm usually a cold hearted bastard.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
